Representative image of the region — not this specific village.

Baranja is a village in Myagdi district with a sizeable Chhantyal settlement — and a distinction all its own. Its former VDC is now part of Mangala Rural Municipality, created in 2017 by merging Baranja with the neighbouring Kuhun, Babiyachaur, Darbang and Arman areas.

Trace-back

In December 2015, Baranja was declared the first fully literate area in Myagdi district, with 95.2 percent of its people able to read and write — a proud milestone for a remote hill community. Like its neighbours, the village belongs to the Chhantyal homeland shaped by copper and mountain farming.

What people do

At the 1991 census the Baranja VDC counted 4,576 people in 891 households. Daily life rests on farming, animal husbandry and income from family abroad.
